I slept on affiliate marketing for way too long.

I thought it was just for big brands or tech wizards with fancy dashboards and spreadsheets. But when I found out Payhip had a built-in affiliate system, and it only took like 10 minutes to set up? Total game-changer.

Let me walk you through how I got it running — and some rookie mistakes I made so you don’t have to.

Why I Even Bothered with Affiliate Marketing?

So I was selling digital planners on Payhip — pretty niche stuff. Sales were okay, but I was wearing all the hats: designing, promoting, emailing, you name it. Exhausting.

Then someone messaged me: “Hey, can I promote your product and earn a cut?” I blinked at the screen. Wait… other people want to sell my stuff for me?

That’s when I dove into Payhip’s affiliate program tools.

How I Set Up the Affiliate Program? (Step-by-Step)

It was honestly way easier than I expected:

  • Logged into my Payhip account, went to “Marketing,” then hit “Affiliate System.” Boom — right there in the dashboard.

  • I toggled it on and set my default commission rate (I started at 30%, which felt generous but fair).

  • Then I created a custom signup link where people could apply to promote my products.

  • I added a short blurb explaining the program, how payouts work, and what kind of affiliates I was looking for.

It felt almost too easy. I kept refreshing the page like, “That’s it??” Yup. That’s it.

Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To)

  • No onboarding email at first. I had people sign up… then nothing. Crickets. They were confused and never shared a thing. So I made a welcome email with product info, promo graphics, and their affiliate link.

  • Didn’t track who was actually selling. I let affiliates join but didn’t check who was converting. Now I log in weekly to track affiliate sales and performance — and shout out top performers or offer bonuses.

  • Set the wrong cookie duration. Payhip lets you choose how long affiliate links stay active. I had it at 1 day (rookie move). Changed it to 30 days — way better results.

Tips to Make It Work Long-Term

  • Create promo materials. Canva is your best friend. I made Instagram-sized images, Pinterest pins, and a few email templates. If you make it easy, affiliates will promote.

  • Feature your top affiliates. One of mine shared my product in a blog post and brought in 80+ sales. I sent her a thank-you gift. She’s still promoting me, two months later.

  • Offer tiered commissions or bonuses. After someone passes 50 sales, I bump their commission to 40%. It keeps them motivated and loyal. (If you’re not sure how to motivate them, using bonuses to incentivize affiliates really works.)

Is It Worth It?

Heck yes. I’ve got people sharing my product in places I’d never reach — niche Facebook groups, homeschool blogs, wellness podcasts. Stuff I wouldn’t even think of. And every sale that comes from them? Feels like magic.

Payhip made it dead simple. No third-party tools, no complicated links. Just a clean little system built into the dashboard that actually works.

If you’re selling anything on Payhip and not using the affiliate system yet? Do it. Like today. You don’t need a huge audience — just a few passionate fans who want to help you win.

Oh, and if you’re getting started? Avoid the usual traps — these common affiliate program mistakes could cost you big time.
