How to Start an Online Coaching Business?

How to Start an Online Coaching Business?

I had no idea what I was doing when I started my online coaching business. I didn’t even call it a “coaching business” at first.

I just knew people kept asking me for advice — how I stayed productive, how I balanced work and side gigs, how I got clients without being pushy. So I figured… maybe I could help folks and make some income doing it?

Spoiler: it wasn’t as easy as throwing up a website and calling myself a coach. But it also wasn’t rocket science either. It just took trial, error, and a lot of late nights Googling stuff like “how do coaches get clients online?”

Find Your “Why” (and Get Real Specific)

You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s the truth: you need a clear niche. When I started, I made the mistake of saying I could help with everything. Time management, freelancing, burnout, life purpose — all of it. The problem? Nobody knew what I actually did.

Once I narrowed it down to “helping freelancers create consistent income without burnout,” everything clicked. My message got sharper, and people finally started booking calls. So yeah — choosing your coaching niche is foundational. Pick a problem you’ve solved in your own life, something you’ve got legit experience with, and lean into that hard.

Don’t Stress the Tech (Seriously)

I wasted so much time comparing platforms. Teachable vs. Kajabi vs. Podia. Zoom vs. Google Meet. WordPress or Squarespace? Looking back, I wish someone just said, “Pick one and go.”

Here’s what I ended up using when I launched:

  • A simple Calendly link for booking

  • Zoom for live sessions

  • Stripe for payments

  • A basic Squarespace site with an “About Me” page, testimonials, and a contact form

That was it. No fancy funnels. No expensive platforms. Just a clean, professional setup that made it easy for people to find me and pay me. If I had known about tools like setting up coaching sessions on Payhip, I would’ve saved a ton of time and stress.

Get Clients Before You Build the Course

I spent two months creating this 6-week program before I ever had a client. Want to guess how many signed up?

One. One person. I almost gave up right there.

After that, I flipped my approach. I started offering free discovery calls, did a few low-cost beta sessions, and built the full offer based on what people actually needed. Not what I thought they needed. Game-changer.

Once I got testimonials from those early clients, it was like someone flipped a switch. Social proof and testimonials matter more than any fancy branding in the early days.

Price with Confidence (Even If You’re New)

Let me be honest — I undercharged like crazy when I started. I thought, “Who’s gonna pay me $100 an hour when I’m not a certified anything?”

But people aren’t just paying for your time — they’re paying for your experience, your insights, your ability to shortcut their learning curve. Once I started creating coaching packages and pricing them right, clients responded differently.

I started with a $47 mini-session, then moved up to $197 for a month-long package. Eventually, I offered $1,200 coaching programs. No one batted an eye — because I had results to back it up.

Keep It Human and Build Trust

Coaching isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about listening. Asking the right questions. Creating space for people to grow. I used to think I had to show off all my knowledge in every session — big mistake. It overwhelmed people.

Once I learned to just slow down and coach — not teach, not preach — my sessions got way better. Clients felt seen, not lectured. And that’s what brings people back.

If you’re working on attracting clients for your coaching business, start by building trust and relationships first — not just funnels and landing pages.

TL;DR? Start Simple. Serve First. Grow From There.

If you’re thinking about starting your own coaching biz, here’s my best advice:

  • Pick a niche and solve one clear problem

  • Start messy — clarity comes with action

  • Use simple tools (don’t overbuild before you’ve sold anything)

  • Offer beta sessions and use feedback to improve

  • Raise your rates as your confidence grows

  • Be real, not perfect — trust builds business

It’s totally normal to feel imposter syndrome at the start. I still do sometimes. But if you’ve helped even one person? You’ve got something valuable to share. And there are people out there waiting for you — not some perfect version of you. Just start.
